WCA 2008 - The First of Many
Well, for some of you who doesn't know what WCA is, it stands for World Cup Asia. It's an Paintball event, and it's the biggest in Asia.
Let's get back a few years, I started paintball in early 2008. I was introduced to the sport by a friend of mine from college. One Saturday we started to play, by the end of the day I was already hooked! The most exciting sport I've ever played. So, the upcoming week me and a couple of my friends ended up taking paintball a bit more seriously. As it was new to us, so we decided to practice. Doing some basic training and drills, while practicing against our mentors on the field. A month passed by and we were in our first paintball tournament. Our team name, D'Hazard, we played division 4 and got 4 place. Not bad I guess.
A few months passed by, and we eventually got better and bought our own markers. And November 2008 came, World Cup Asia time! This will be my first Major International Event of any sport I've played (I've played basketball since the 3rd grade). I was hyped!
I wasn't going to play with my original team because only me and Luthfi could play, so we joined our senior team, GOBER. They were short on personals also so we fit in nicely. GOBER was Palti, Ivan and Kelby. They added Menyeng and Odie from Team GnG (our rivals) and Luthfi and I (D'Hazard). We got Rony Budiman from Team Java Genies to coach us. He wasn't playing this event so I was excited that he could come and coach us.
Game day came. I woke up earlier than the others. showered and got prepared. Got down and was going to have breakfast. I went and saw paintballers from every country participating for this WCA, I was surprised and so hyped to see so many paintballers in one place! And yes, it is my first international paintball tournament. I got my breakfast and the other teammates joined me. we finished and headed up to our room to get our gear. We went down and waited for the bus, I remember it was around 6 AM.
As soon as we got to the field, I was so amazed because of how crowded it was! We got ready, geared up, markers ready and waited for our game. This was my first tournament so I wasn't really expecting much playing time. I was already glad I could even come. Rony asked me where I usually play, since there were already two snake players ( Odie and Luthfi ), I said I could play anywhere you put me. He said Okay.
I didn't play our first game, we won by a good margin. And that got us pumping good. There were a few things that were a bit of concern, the back snake, so that's when Rony asked me to play at the Back Snake. I got the nod for the second game, and we crushed them instantly. We were hitting on all cylinders and went 6-0 for the first day! Something that never happened to GOBER before. This was all too good to be true. We already made Sunday so the second day Rony tried some new gameplans, didn't work though, and we lost our second day but was already threw to Sunday. We got to the quaterfinals and had a shot at podium on our last game. We were against a team we defeated on the prelims and was confident we got this game. Well, let's say that the "game" didn't go our way. We made some crucial mistakes and lost the game.
But, the result was us, GOBER, was ramked Top 10 in Division 3 at WCA 2008.
I was pleased, really pleased. It was my first International Paintball Tournament and we ranked in the Top 10!
